Epsom Derby Festival 2026

The Epsom Derby Festival is the historic heart of the Flat season — two days at the Downs on which the best three-year-olds in Europe are tested over a mile and a half on the most idiosyncratic course in world racing. The 2026 renewal runs Friday 5 and Saturday 6 June.

The meeting at a glance

Epsom's showpiece meeting condenses the classic generation's Flat championships into 48 hours. Oaks Friday features the fillies' Classic over 1m 4f; Derby Saturday is anchored by the Derby itself plus the Coronation Cup and a deep undercard. Prize money across the two days exceeds £5 million and the racing draws a worldwide audience — the Derby has been run continuously since 1780.

Feature races

Group 1 Classics
  • Derby (Saturday) — 1m 4f for three-year-old colts and fillies. The original Classic, and often the race that crowns a European middle-distance champion. Past winners include Galileo, Sea The Stars, Frankel-sired winners Adayar and City of Troy.
  • Oaks (Friday) — 1m 4f for three-year-old fillies. The fillies' Classic, and a reliable pointer to autumn mile-and-a-half Group 1s.

  • Coronation Cup (Saturday) — 1m 4f Group 1 for older horses. A rematch ground for the previous year's Classic generation.
  • Diomed Stakes (Saturday) — 1m Group 3 for older milers.
  • Princess Elizabeth Stakes (Friday) — 1m Group 3 for older fillies and mares.
  • Surrey Stakes (Saturday) — 7f Listed race for three-year-olds.
    • Handicaps — the Dash Handicap (the UK's fastest 5f race, run down the straight course) is a notorious betting heat, along with the Investec Mile and the Epsom Handicap.

    Understanding the course

    Epsom is a left-handed horseshoe shape, sharp and spectacularly undulating — there is no flat furlong anywhere on the course. The Derby distance climbs for the first half mile, swings sharply downhill around Tattenham Corner, and then sweeps towards a camber that pulls horses towards the far rail in the closing stages. It's a course that rewards balance, fluency and sharp tactical awareness as much as pure class.

    Horses who have never seen the Epsom gradients can be badly unbalanced first time out. Most Derby winners have a run here or at a similar undulating track beforehand.

    Betting angles

  • Trials form matters. The Chester Vase, Derby Trial at Lingfield and Dante Stakes at York all produce Derby contenders — read the trials carefully, particularly for horses who've shown they handle undulations.
  • Draw bias on the round course. Low draws can be favoured in sprint handicaps down the straight course; on the round course the bias is far less pronounced but varies year to year.
  • Sire influence. Some stallions (Galileo, Frankel, Sea The Stars) are proven Derby sires; progeny by sprint-leaning sires are usually harder to trust at the trip.
  • Market moves into the Derby itself are loud. Bet365, William Hill and Paddy Power typically lead the market for the Derby; compare prices carefully in the final 24 hours — shrewd money often appears late.
