Glorious Goodwood 2026
Glorious Goodwood — officially the Qatar Goodwood Festival — is the summer showpiece of the Flat season, a five-day fixture on the Sussex Downs with more Group 1 racing than any other meeting outside Royal Ascot. The 2026 renewal runs
28 July – 1 August.
The meeting at a glance
Goodwood blends top-level Group racing with notoriously competitive handicaps. Every day has a flagship Group contest plus at least one huge-field handicap with fields of 16–20 runners and ante-post markets that open weeks in advance. Prize money across the week exceeds £5 million, and the switch of top horses between trips means the meeting often reshapes the autumn Group 1 picture.
Goodwood is also known for its unique atmosphere — a less formal feel than Ascot, with the Sussex Downs providing the most spectacular setting in British racing.
Feature races
Group 1 Championship Races
Sussex Stakes (Wednesday) — 1m for three-year-olds and older. The summer mile championship — the meeting's flagship race and a regular rematch venue for the Queen Anne and St James's Palace fields.
Goodwood Cup (Tuesday) — 2m staying championship. A traditional stop for top stayers on the way to the Doncaster Cup.
Nassau Stakes (Thursday) — 1m 2f for three-year-old and older fillies and mares. Often attracts the best middle-distance fillies in training.
Other Major Group Contests
King George Stakes (Friday) — 5f Group 2 sprint. Opening skirmish in the summer sprint picture.
Richmond Stakes (Wednesday) — 6f Group 2 for two-year-old colts.
Molecomb Stakes (Thursday) — 5f Group 3 for two-year-olds.
Lennox Stakes (Tuesday) — 7f Group 2 for three-year-olds and older.
Vintage Stakes (Tuesday) — 7f Group 2 for two-year-olds.
Stewards' Cup (Saturday) — 6f handicap sprint, one of the biggest-field betting races of the summer.
Famous Handicaps
Goodwood Stakes (Tuesday) — 2m 5f staying handicap.
Stewards' Cup (Saturday) — Britain's most famous 6f handicap.
Golden Mile (Friday) — 1m handicap with 20+ runners.
Understanding the course
Goodwood is a right-handed undulating course with a straight course for races up to 7f and a turn that produces drama in longer races. The track has a distinct camber and a run-in that climbs slightly; closers can find it hard to pick up on soft ground, while front runners benefit from the draw on the straight course in large fields.
The Downs weather is famously unpredictable — fog can delay racing, sudden storms can turn quick ground soft within hours. Check going updates and the weather forecast carefully.
Betting angles
Draw bias on the straight course. In 18+ runner sprints down the straight course, high draws near the stands' rail often dominate, though watering patterns can flip it. Recent Stewards' Cup winners have come from drawn 25+ more often than not.
Post-Ascot form lines. Many Goodwood feature winners come out of Royal Ascot — horses who ran well without winning there often prove well handicapped or well placed at Goodwood.
Trainer patterns. John Gosden, Aidan O'Brien and Charlie Appleby target specific races at Goodwood year after year; noting their stable commentary before declarations can give real edge.
Extra places in the handicaps. The Stewards' Cup, Goodwood Stakes and Golden Mile typically see 5–7 places offered by major bookmakers. Our each-way betting guide explains how these extra places can swing the value calculation.
Going changes matter. Goodwood can ride bone-firm or genuinely soft within the same meeting — ground-sensitive horses often look huge value when conditions finally match their profile.
How we surface the value
Our value engine compares every UK bookmaker's Goodwood price against the Betfair Exchange benchmark in real time. Goodwood produces some of the biggest overrounds of the summer on its huge-field handicaps, and that's where the fattest value windows appear. Our overround guide explains why.
