Royal Ascot 2026

Royal Ascot is the crown jewel of the British Flat season — five days, 35 races, eight Group 1s, and the highest concentration of elite Flat racing anywhere in the world. The 2026 renewal runs 16–20 June at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.

The meeting at a glance

Royal Ascot is built on scale. Every day features at least one Group 1, plus Group 2 and Group 3 races, plus high-class handicaps that attract the top jockeys and biggest fields of the year. Total prize money typically exceeds £10 million across the week, and horses are shipped in from Ireland, France, the US, Japan, Australia and Hong Kong to compete.

Whether you follow the Classics or sprinting, stayers or juveniles, Royal Ascot has a showpiece race in your division. It's the meeting that crowns champions across every category in a single week.

Feature races

Group 1 Championship Races
  • Gold Cup (Ladies' Day, Thursday) — 2 miles 4 furlongs, the staying championship. Past winners include Stradivarius (four-time winner), Yeats (four-time winner), Kyprios and Courage Mon Ami.
  • Prince of Wales's Stakes (Wednesday) — 1 mile 2 furlongs, the meeting's middle-distance championship. Often features Derby winners and King George prospects.
  • Queen Anne Stakes (Tuesday) — the opening Group 1 of the meeting, 1 mile, for older milers. Traditionally the curtain-raiser.
  • St James's Palace Stakes (Tuesday) — 1 mile for three-year-old colts; the summer championship for the Guineas generation.
  • Coronation Stakes (Friday) — 1 mile for three-year-old fillies; the fillies' equivalent of the St James's Palace.
  • Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Saturday) — 6 furlongs, the Group 1 sprint for older horses.
  • King's Stand Stakes (Tuesday) — 5 furlongs, the minimum-trip championship sprint, often attracting Australian raiders.
  • Commonwealth Cup (Friday) — 6 furlongs for three-year-old sprinters.
  • Top Handicaps
  • Royal Hunt Cup (Wednesday) — 1 mile handicap, always enormous fields and a ferocious betting heat.
  • Wokingham Stakes (Saturday) — 6 furlong handicap sprint, another huge-field betting race.
  • Ascot Stakes (Tuesday) — 2 mile 4 furlong staying handicap.
  • Britannia Stakes (Thursday) — 1 mile handicap for three-year-old colts.
  • Understanding the course

Ascot is a right-handed galloping course of 1m 6f round, with a long, stamina-sapping straight from the turn into the home stretch. The straight course (used for the Jubilee, Queen Anne and sprint handicaps) runs at a separate angle and tests a different type of horse — front runners who can maintain a rhythm often have an edge over closers.

Ground at Ascot can vary dramatically in June; watering is used if conditions are firm, but a heavy shower can change the complexion of the meeting overnight. Watch the going stick updates each morning during the week.

    Betting angles

  • Draw bias matters in big fields on the straight course. High numbers (toward the stands' rail) often dominate in 20+ runner handicaps, though the bias varies year to year with the watering pattern.
  • Foreign raiders. Australian sprinters, American turf horses and Japanese stars have all won at Royal Ascot in recent years — the best form from other jurisdictions should be taken seriously, not discounted.
  • Three-year-olds in open Group 1s get weight concessions. A top three-year-old taking on older horses often represents value, especially early in the meeting before form lines firm up.
  • Each-way terms are generous in the big handicaps. Most bookmakers offer extra places on the Royal Hunt Cup, Britannia and Wokingham — shop around, as this is where the best sites differ most. Our guide to each-way betting breaks down when these terms add real value.
  • Trainer preparation patterns. Aidan O'Brien and Sir Michael Stoute famously target Royal Ascot above almost everything else; read stable debut runs for pointers.
  • How we surface the value

Our value engine runs live throughout the week, comparing every UK bookmaker price against the Betfair Exchange benchmark. Because Royal Ascot fields are often huge, market overrounds can balloon — that's when value shows up, and our guide to understanding overround explains why.

Ante-post markets open months in advance for the championship races; Hunt Cup and Wokingham handicap ante-post markets typically open about a week before the declarations with extra places and enhanced each-way terms.
